Argentine Alfajor Ranked Third Best Dessert in the World

Buenos Aires, December 30 (NA) – The prestigious gastronomy site, Taste Atlas, which compiles rankings from thousands of user reviews from different countries, ranked the Argentine alfajor as third globally, behind Greece's Melomakarona and Algeria's Makroud el louse. The recognition for its balanced flavor, unmistakable texture, and strong cultural identity not only confirms its popularity within Argentina but also solidifies its international prestige, reported Argentine News. It defines alfajores as two round, soft cookies filled with dulce de leche or jam, covered in chocolate or powdered sugar, and crowned as the best cookie in the world, highlighting its evolution and flavor as a cultural icon, with brands like La Olla de Cobre, La Goulue, and Señor Alfajor at the top of recent global rankings. Today, they come in chocolate, vanilla, fruit, mousse, or special combinations, in different sizes and formats. Although its roots are in Andalusia, Spain, in Latin America it evolved and adopted its own identities. In our country, it has over time become a cultural symbol. The site also reviews the origin of the term 'alfajor,' derived from the Arabic word al-hasú, associated with the idea of a filling. Unlike the top two, the desserts in those positions do not contain dulce de leche: the Greek melomakarona and the Algerian makroud el louse. The former belongs to traditional Greek Christmas pastry and is made with olive oil and spices like cinnamon and cloves. Argentina also has the world's largest dulce de leche factory, Vacalín, a leader in the Argentine dairy industry with over 50 years of experience. The company has just inaugurated a new 'Vacalin Como en Casa' store in the Recoleta neighborhood. 'We are a company with three generations of history, born around dulce de leche, which today continues to grow and innovate without losing its identity,' stated Juan Manuel Rodríguez, general manager of Vacalín.
